Questions and answers
Which university ranking is used?
Only the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published by ShanghaiRanking, is used. This series does not mix QS or Times Higher Education rankings.
What do the bars represent, and can scores be compared across years?
Bars represent the relative score in each edition, not a university’s rank or an absolute measure of quality comparable across years. Methodology, institutional scope, mergers and names may change between editions.
How are ties and universities outside the top 100 handled?
Published ranks and ties are preserved. The source contains every institution ranked 100 or better, including 101 institutions in 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2011 because of ties. Absence from the top 100 is not a zero score.
