Questions and answers

What does the Human Development Index measure?

The Human Development Index combines health, education and income. These observations cover 1990–2023 using the 2025 UNDP vintage, rather than mixing old report editions.

Which countries are included in the ranking?

Ranks are recalculated among countries and territories with a published value in each year. Coverage varies; missing observations are not zero and are not interpolated. Monaco and North Korea are not ranked by this series.

How are tied scores and animated transitions handled?

Equal scores retain equal ranks, including ties at the top-ten boundary. The chart shows published values at each year; motion between years is a visual transition.
